Master of Mallala Round 2 - 23-24 May 2015

Unfortunately this was a frustrating weekend of racing. It started poorly after I forgot to put the Dorian timing transponder in for qualifying and had to start race 1 at the rear of the field (behind 8 HQs as well as the 5 other Saloon Cars). I managed get past all the HQs in just over 1 lap and caught and passed one of the Saloon Cars too to finish 5th.

It went downhill from there though, with an electrical gremlin rearing its head and causing the car to run very rough between about 4300-5500 rpm. Despite replacing numerous components like coil packs and trying a fresh batch of fuel, the problem stubbornly refused to go away. I don't know how much power I was actually losing, but the car felt and sounded pretty bad from where I was sitting. We couldn't reproduce the problem in the garage and weren't able to diagnose it.

I finished the first 4 races in 5th place, and the last one 6th. Given the disappointing results we are considering our options, including maybe parking the car for the rest of this season so our finances can recover a bit and we can finish the car properly and come back stronger (hopefully!) next season.

Since this meeting, Craig has found a problem with the gearbox mounting which may have been causing the severe shudder in the higher rev range that I thought was a dropped cylinder or two. We won't know for sure until we get on the track again whether this was the problem.

Here's a video of the only fun part of the weekend:
