2012 Shannons Nationals Round 7, Sandown

This was the final round of the Shannons Nationals for 2012. We had a big field of 26 cars in total, with 4 in Trophy class.
Qualifying went ok and I was 21st overall, 1st in class. Saturday was very warm and humid so the conditions were fairly trying but everything came together in race 1. I got a good start and gained a few positions on the first lap. I was able to keep a few of the late model cars between myself and the next Trophy class competitor for most of the race. I finished 18th overall.
Race 2 also went well with another good start. I made up 2 spots on lap 1 before the safety car made an appearance. When we resumed a lap later I briefly got into 15th before going back to 16th where I finished, again 1st in class.
For race 3 I was determined to make it a clean sweep, but things didn't go quite as well. A stalled car on my side of the grid meant that the cars in the left lane got a better start. I then got caught up in a traffic jam going into turn 4 and one of the other Trophy class cars got the jump onto the back straight. I spent the rest of the race trying to catch him but couldn't quite do it before the chequered flag and finished 19th.
We are very happy to be bringing home two trophies - 1st place for the round and the big one, Trophy Class series champion for 2012. Big thanks to our sponsors Walkom Automotive, Frank Walsh Drilling, Kubota & L K Diesel. We are also very grateful to all our friends & family who have helped us get this far.
Thanks for your support and we'll see you at the track in 2013!

Of course, Kubota and LK Diesel join our long-term sponsors Frank Walsh Drilling. We are taking the opportunity to add some more prominent signage to show our appreciation. Stay tuned for some photos after Sandown!

SA State Championship Round 4 2012

The final round of the 2012 SA State Motor Racing Championship was a one-day twilight meeting at Mallala on 17th November. I qualified 4th out of 6 Saloon Cars and was looking forward to a good day & night of racing.

Unfortunately, this was another one of those meetings where things didn't quite go to plan. I got a good start in race 1 - for about 3 metres anyway, at which point the splines sheared off the left hand axle. I was able to complete the first lap (slowly), but then made a quick detour through pit lane to check whether the boss (Craig) was happy for me to continue so I could at least get some points. With the thumbs up, I rejoined the action and did finish the race, or so I thought. The detour had cost me a lap so I only completed 3 out of 5 laps - less than the 75% required to be classified as a finisher.

Craig was able to quickly locate a replacement axle and I was back on track for race 2, starting from the rear of the grid. This race went without a hitch and I finished 4th after a bit of dicing with a couple of the other cars and swapping positions a few times.

For race 3 I was optimistic of making up another couple of places, but to my dismay the replacement axle also stripped its splines as I left the start line; a carbon copy of race 1. This time I didn't worry about going into the pits and kept circulating, being lapped twice but completing 6 of the 8 laps - enough to get points this time! This final race was a double points race so I was happy just to finish and secure enough points to hold on to 2nd place overall in the 2012 State Championship.

On the bright side, it was far better for the axle problems to occur at this meeting than at the following week's final of the Shannons Nationals at Sandown. One axle breaking is bad luck, but 2 in one day indicates an underlying problem, which we are now in the process of rectifying with a new diff and spool.

See you at Sandown!

P.S. Here's my video of the start of race 3:
