This weekend we ventured across to Wakefield Park near Goulburn in NSW for the first time. This meeting was the penultimate round of the Shannons Nationals and the plan was to gain some extra points to make up for a rather disappointing result at Phillip Island 3 weeks ago.
There was a bit of deja vu during Friday practice as the steady rain soaked the track and created a number of deep rivers across the track. I went out anyway for some sighting laps as it was my first time there and I could do with more practice on wet tracks. It dried out later in the day, but the four rivers remained in the last session making it impossible to set any meaningful times.
Saturday was much better with the sun shining, despite overnight snow in the town & surrounding hills (in spring!!). I finally had the chance to learn the track properly. Being the only Trophy Class car there, I qualified last but not by much. Race 1 was a lot of fun as I was able to mix it with some of the late model cars, finishing 12th out of 14.
Race 2 was similar and my lap times were improving each session. I managed to catch an AU Falcon but just ran out of laps before I could make a decent passing move.
I got a good start in race 3 and gained a few places. This race was a bit more spread out but I got my best lap time for the weekend while chasing one of the Dial Before You Dig AU Falcons, a 1:11.6504.
We enjoyed this track and are hoping to return one day! The next National round is Sandown in late November, the weekend after the final SA state round at Mallala.
Special thanks to Josh and Chris Kean, and Les Morrall, for making this trip possible.
